KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: 2008 Record: 79-83 (48.8%), +6.75 ML Units (#10 of 30)
StatFox 2009 Beginning Power Rating: : 93 (#18 of 30)
2008 Runs: Scored - 5.56 (#1 of 30), Allowed - 5.97 (#30 of 30)
2008 Pitching WHIP stats: Starters - 1.601 (#29 of 30), Bullpen - 1.537 (#28 of 30)
Strengths: The Texas Rangers can hit, make no mistake about that. They scored a major league best 901 runs and return almost every player that contributed to total. Josh Hamilton will try to duplicate his sensational breakout year and second sacker Ian Kinsler led the AL in hits and runs. More than enough offense for a team that finished above third place for the first time in a decade in 2008.
Weaknesses: “Alex, I’ll take pitching woes for $200.” -This team allowed 967 runs last season in major league baseball. - “Who are the pitching deprived Texas Rangers”. Team President Nolan Ryan has made it his personal mission to find 10 competent pitchers who should be drawing a salary in the big leagues.
Rotation Outlook: Ryan challenged Kevin Millwood to drop weight and get in better shape to make his curve ball more effective. Enigmatic Vincente Padilla has been winning year-losing year pitcher, which could spell bad news off 15-10 season. Lefty Matt Harrison was 9-3, with undesirable 5.49 ERA. How these three pitch will set up Rangers season.
Bullpen Situation: : Rangers relievers pitched 572.2 innings, the most in the majors. No team can possibly expect to have a decent club if the bullpen is warming up everyday in the fifth inning. Frank Francisco and C.J. Wilson lead a cast of thousands who have asked the Texas front office to be paid straight commission based on appearances and times warming up.
Sportsbook.com Season Wins Prop: Over 74 (-115)/Under 74 (-115)
StatFox Doug's Take: The Rangers are like the really good softball team that just beats the ball around the yard. The pitching might be slightly better and the offense slightly worse. At present no team has as many good prospects in the minors, thus 2011 could really be the beginning of Rangers competing or taking over AL West. This year they should be within two games of oddsmakers total and we’ll side with the Over.
Projected Finish: 3rd in AL West - CLICK HERE for more on the AL West.
SEATTLE: 2008 Record: 61-101 (37.7%), -37.15 ML Units (#29 of 30)
StatFox 2009 Beginning Power Rating: : 81 (#28 of 30)
2008 Runs: Scored - 4.14 (#26 of 30), Allowed - 5.01 (#24 of 30)
2008 Pitching WHIP stats: Starters - 1.543 (#27 of 30), Bullpen - 1.459 (#23 of 30)
Strengths: Teams that lose 101 games don’t have many strengths, which is the case of Seattle. The Mariners are going through a top to bottom change and Ichiro Suzuki and Felix Hernandez are the two mainstays being called up during this transition. Adrian Beltre has been a dependable 25 home runs a year guy and shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt has offensive skills and is a flashy fielder.
Weaknesses: Only Oakland scored fewer runs in the junior circuit and this won’t turnaround overnight. If Ichiro wasn’t so valuable as a leadoff man, he could likely contribute more out of the three-hole, though that would not guarantee any more Mariners would be on base.
Rotation Outlook: As opposed to the A’s, at least Seattle has a top-notch starter in Hernandez. Brandon Morrow and Ryan Rowland-Smith should be part a decent rotation, which has Erik Bedard right behind Hernandez. Bedard’s only apparent issue is his own behavior. The M’s could use a more reliable Jarrod Washburn.
Bullpen Situation: : This sets up to be a season long conundrum. Aaron Heilman, Mark Lowe and Roy Corcoran are all candidates to be the main guys out of manager’s Don Wakamatsu bullpen. Would recommend a case of Tums in the manager’s office.
Sportsbook.com Season Wins Prop: Over 73 (-115)/Under 73 (-115)
StatFox Doug's Take: It’s hard to see where this team makes up a dozen games even if they play San Diego six times. Not losing a 100 games seems reasonable, however Over the total is about as likely as Starbucks expansion.
Projected Finish: 4th in AL West - CLICK HERE for more on the AL West.
BETTING TRENDS

One of the growing resources utilized by sports handicappers is the public betting information offered by a variety of sources. Leading the way in this is Sportsbook.com, who offers the data at its website in real-time. Boasting a giant sports bettor customer base, Sportsbook is able to present data that is accurately reflective of public sentiment. This beats other sources that may be mixing sharp AND public opinion, have a much smaller customer base, or simply presenting the opinions of contest players, not bettors. The Betting Trends from Sportsbook show what percentage of bets are on each side of the pointspread or total. The results can be especially valuable in high profile games.

This data can be used to profit from. When given the choice, most professional bettors would choose to be on the side of the "house", or that opposite of the betting public. Alternatively, others believe in the theory that there is "strength in numbers". Neither belief is foolproof, but if you follow these Betting Trends for long enough, you’ll surely form your own opinion.

*Rangers-Mariners Preview* ==========================

By KATE HEDLIN STATS Writer

Texas (87-73) at Seattle (83-77), 9:10 p.m. EDT

If last month the Texas Rangers had been hitting as well as they have the last two games, they may not be making offseason plans.

The Rangers look to win their third straight Saturday night when night they continue a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners.

Texas (87-73) was two games behind Boston for the AL wild card last month before injuries took a toll and the lineup struggled. The Rangers were shut out five times between Sept. 5-18 and held scoreless in two games by the Angels this week to fall out of playoff contention.

After their 13th shutout loss of the season Wednesday - in which Texas was held to just one hit - the Rangers have responded with 18 runs and 31 hits in back-to-back wins. They beat Seattle 7-4 on Friday, scoring three runs in the ninth.

The victory assured the Rangers of second place in the AL West for the second straight year behind Los Angeles. If Seattle had swept the series, the two would have been tied.

"It means everything. If you can't get first, you want to finish second," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We certainly didn't want to lose it and we certainly didn't want to share it."

Texas jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings Friday, but Brandon McCarthy allowed three runs in the fourth and the Mariners took the lead the next inning. Michael Young tied it in the eighth on an RBI single and Taylor Teagarden hit a go-ahead RBI single before Elvis Andrus doubled home two runs in the ninth.

Julio Borbon, who made his first start in center field, was one of three Rangers with three hits. Borbon is hitting .320 in 44 games this season.

Seattle (83-77) had its three-game winning streak snapped. Ichiro Suzuki had his third hitless performance in six games while Ken Griffey Jr., possibly beginning his final series with the Mariners, was 0 for 3 with a walk and a strikeout.

Mark Lowe was charged with the blown save and David Aardsma the loss. Seattle has five blown saves in its last eight chances.

Griffey may be able to help the Mariners bounce back. He has two hits in nine at-bats - a double and home run - against Tommy Hunter (9-5, 4.10 ERA), who will take the mound for Texas.

Hunter has given up 14 runs in eight innings over his last two starts. After surviving a shaky outing to record a win at Oakland, the right-hander was unable to do the same against Los Angeles on Monday, allowing seven runs and seven hits in a season-low 2 1-3 innings of an 11-0 loss.

The right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA against the Mariners this season. He tossed a six-hitter against them on Sept. 13 in a 7-2 victory.

Ryan Rowland-Smith (4-4, 3.91) counter for Seattle after allowing five runs in seven innings of a 5-4 loss at Toronto on Sunday.

This is Rowland-Smith's first start against the Rangers. He has faced them seven times in relief, giving up three runs over 10 2-3 innings.
